BSN Community members are very welcome to join the Anglo-Netherlands Society.

Based in the UK and established in 1920, the Society exists to promote social, artistic, literary, educational, scientific and other non-party-political interests in common to the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

As a membership body run by volunteers, the ANS hosts a series of events that they believe will be of interest to their approximate 500 Members. You can get a good impression of the their activities by viewing this edition of their newsletter: ANS Summer 23 newsletter

Governance

The ANS President is The Rt Hon Lord Taylor of Holbeach and the Vice-President the Ambassador of the Netherlands, HE Mr Karel van Oosterom. ’The ANS and its governing Council are chaired by Dick van den Broek (ex-Shell). The ANS also enjoy the support of HE the British Ambassador at The Hague, HE Mrs Joanna Roper, and her team. They have Corporate Patrons in Shell, Unilever, ABN AMRO Bank, Heineken, ING Bank, PwC and Rabobank, and the Carpenters’ Company is a Corporate Member. Sir Michael Perry, the former Chairman of Unilever, is their immediate Past President.

Outreach

For over ten years, the ANS’ main form of outreach has been to support annual essay competitions at the two UK universities with Dutch Studies, UCL and Sheffield. They have moreover recently broken new ground, with UCL in establishing an ANS bursary for postgraduates in Dutch Studies at UCL’s School of European Languages, Culture and Society; and with Maastricht University in an experimental essay competition.
